What is Web Hosting?

A:
Web hosting is the act of renting space and bandwidth through a company so that you may publish your web site online.

You can either opt for free hosting that is usually supported with banners and pop ups, or may opt to get paid web hosting, which gives you complete control over your site contents.

How do I register a domain name?

A:

Domain name registration is a relatively painless procedure.

First you'll need to make sure that the domain name you're interested in is still available. Most any place you can register a domain name at, also has a tool for checking name availability. A couple of places to go to are Namesecure and Register.com. After you have found a name, simply signup to any domain name registrar, like the ones listed above and purchase your domain name.

Back to the Questions

What is MySQL, Access, and MS SQL?

A:

MySQL, Access and MS SQL are database systems. Databases are typically used to store data. Data which can be called upon in the future.

Back to the Questions

What is ASP, PHP, CGI, etc?

A:

These are various programming languages which can be used to create your website.

HTML: Hypertext Markup Language: This is your basic language for creating a web page.

ASP/PHP: Both of these competing languages provide server side script processing and database interconnectivity.

CGI: No, this doesn't stand for Computer Generated Images. CGI - Common Gateway Interface is a standard protocol for interfacing external application software with an information server, commonly a web server. CGI, however has been known to put an immense strain on web servers.

Back to the Questions

If I host my site here will there be banners on it?

A:

Never, unless of course you put them on your site. This question typically arises from those free hosting sites. Most free hosting companies will place ads on a users website in order to generate revenue. And in doing so, usually makes the site look rather unprofessional.

Back to the Questions

I already have a domain/host, would I need to get a new domain to host my site here?

A:

No. Provided that the domain is registered in your name or you at least have access to it, you can simply update your namservers (from where you manage your domain names) to that of your new host. On a side note, your domain should always be registered to you.

Back to the Questions

What is a sub-domain?

A:

Consider subdomains as an extension of your domain. For example, we have www.pcproshosting.com. A subdomain would be members.pcproshosting.com, and another would be support.pcproshosting.com.

Subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main domain site.

Back to the Questions

What is domain parking?

A:

Every see those coming soon pages? Yes, those are usually domain parked pages. Domain parking lets you buy a domain name and then have a 'coming soon' page on it.

Typically, most domain registrars provide this feature by default.

Back to the Questions

How do I upload to my site?

A:

Uploading your site can be done in many ways, but the most popular is FTP.

When your hosting account was created, you should have been provided with an FTP account. Using software such as CuteFTP or FlashFXP, you can log into your host. Then, using the program like a normal windows program, you can drag and drop files onto your web host. These files become live online instantaneously.

Through your c-panel here at PC Pros Hosting, there is also a File Manager which allows you to upload files through your web broweser. However, an FTP program is still a much better and faster way to manage your files.

Back to the Questions

I've seen Unix, Linux and Windows based hosts, what's the difference?

A:

These are the various operating systems used to run web servers. Depending on which operating system to go with depends on your needs.

If you need to support Microsoft products such as ASP, MS Access, or VBScript, then Windows hosting would be better.

Any of these operating system will display your web site.

There are some things to remember.

First of all, just because you use Windows at home does not mean you should use Windows hosting. The two are completely different, and having a Windows system at home will not affect your ability to communicate with a UNIX server.

Secondly, Linux is much more common with web hosts due to its superior stability and because it is free. Since it is free, Linux hosting is usually cheaper than Windows. Just because it’s free does not mean it’s not as good.

At PC Pros Hosting we use a Linux based system.

A:

At PC Pros Hosting we currently use PayPal for processing our payments. So what does that mean? It means you can use your PayPal account if you already have, or you can pay by credit card.

Back to the Questions

What is PayPal?

A:

PayPal lets anyone with an email address send money to anyone else with an email address.

Each user signs up with PayPal and then enters their necessary banking and credit card information. Once registration is completed, your email address is all you need to send and receive money.

Back to the Questions

Couldn't I just host my site on my home computer?

A:

Depending on your ISP you could, but that’s definitely not recommended.

First of all, most ISPs have clauses that do not let you use your internet connection for web hosting - doing so will result in termination of your account. In fact, most ISP block the port which would allow you to host your own web server.

Second of all, think of the headaches it can provide: making sure your system is secure so that no one can hack into it, having your computer on 24/7, and other such problems.

Third of all, think of the performance. Most good web hosts use powerful servers with lots of RAM and high performance hard disks. Furthermore, they have multiple internet connections at speeds far higher than what residential DSL or cable service can provide.

Lastly there are all the issues of support. If something goes wrong, it will be your job to fix it - you will not have a professional to correct the problem.

Back to the Questions

What's a dedicated IP for?

A:

For most people, a dedicated IP is not required. But for people that want to provide anonymous FTP or a website using SSL, a dedicated IP can make that easier.

Back to the Questions

What is disk space and bandwidth?

A:
Diskspace is the size your website can be. Every single letter on your website has to be stored somewhere on your web host's server. Each letter is one byte, and a megabyte is roughly one million bytes. HTML pages are usually very small, but it is the extra images, scripts, and even databases that can take up large amounts of disk space.

Bandwidth/Transfer is the amount of data the server will allow your site to send in a month. Transfer is usually measured in gigabytes - billions of bytes. Once you go over your monthly limit, a host may either shut your site down for the remainder of the month or it can charge you 'overage.'

Back to the Questions

How can I see how many hits my site is getting?

A:

PC Pros Hosting provides several programs for checking your site's statistics. Simply log in to your c-panel and go to the Web/FTP Stats section.

There you will find programs such as Webalizer and Awstats.
